Hiring a Professional Belly Dancer
Frequently Asked Questions
:

How do I hire a Belly Dancer for my special event? To book a dancer for a performance or class please call Belly Motions at 305.663.1553 for further information and/or questions. To officially hire a performer a contract and a non-refundable deposit payable by credit card will be required. The contract can be downloaded from our site, faxed or emailed to you.

When is full payment due? Belly Motions requires a non-refundable deposit for each booking. The remaining balance as stated on the contract is to be paid to the hired performer(s) by cash or company check in a timely manner after the performance takes place.

How much space will be needed for the dancer(s) to perform? The more space the better! Our dancers often perform with large props such as Isis Wings, Veils, Cane, etc. that require a space at least 20x20'. Dancers will make the best of the space allotted, but the more space given the better the dancer can perform. *Always keep small children clear of the dance space.

What type of sound system will be sufficient for the best possible performance? For small events with less than 20 people in a small indoor space, a home stereo system should be sufficient. For larger events in spaces such as ballrooms, wedding halls, etc. a DJ or professional sound system should be utilized for the best sound quality. The volume should be loud enough for all guests to hear. Volume also helps create an atmosphere for a truly enjoyable show for all.

When will the dancer arrive to perform? The dancer will arrive within 15-minutes of the scheduled performance time noted on the contract. She will be in full costume and makeup ready to perform. The dancer will call you the day of the event to touch-base and re-confirm. Remember dancers may have 2 or more shows in one night so we ask that the performance start within 15-minutes of scheduled performance time for additional fees may apply.

The belly dance performance is a surprise. What should I do when the dancer arrives? During surprise performance events it is recommended that the client have a room or restroom available to have the dancer remain in until performance time. Remember the dancer needs to be aware of where she will be dancing so it always helps to secretively show the dancer her dance space before the show actually begins. It’s also important that you give the dancer ample time to prepare for her entrance. Make sure guests are cleared of the way and that the music can be heard loud and clear.

What happens during the 25-minute Oriental Dance Show? During a standard 25-minute show, the dancer will usually spend 10-15 minutes performing and will spend the remaining time interacting with the audience. A typical show looks like this...
First, the dancer will enter to a fast, exciting piece of music. She will most likely have a veil or wings and will use these beautiful pieces of fabric to draw attention to her presence. Secondly, the dancer will move into a more folkloric section of her performance. Here the dancer may perform with a specific prop (this may be finger cymbals, cane, sword, etc.). Thirdly, the dancer will perform to the traditional drum solo. This is a fast-paced piece of music consisting only of percussion. The dancer will follow the music with accents, pops and locks with her body and hips. Next, the interactive section of the show begins. This is when Arabic Pop music will begin to play. At this time audience participation will take place. The type of event will determine who the dancer will get up first to dance, but usually the dancer will start with the birthday boy/girl or the ladies of the audience. Finally, the dancer will end to a finale and will gracefully exit the performance area.

What is Audience Participation? Audience Participation is a section of the show where the dancer will select individuals (birthday boy/girl, women, children, men) out of the audience to join the fun and dance with her during the show. During this time most participants will dance, laugh and enjoy the excitement. This is usually where the most photos are taken, especially if the event is a birthday, wedding, or themed event. The dance interaction is appropriate and festive and usually begins toward the middle of the show.

How can we encourage or support the dancer during the show? Traditionally clapping and Zaghareeting (a trill or sound produced by the mouth) are used to add excitement and energy to the dancers performance. The dancer will often communicate with the audience when she would like to hear clapping. She will also Zaghareet to the audience which can be imitated by the audience members. Leud comments or degrading remarks should not be tolerated by the client. Inappropriate body language should also be discouraged as our dancers are professionals.

Do the dancers accept tips? Yes, in traditional Arabic culture it is part of the performance to give and accept tips. Our dancers receive tips in three ways: The audience may throw tips over the dancer and onto the floor during her performance, the audience may place tips in the dancer’s armband, or audience may hand tips to the dancer after her performance. To maintain the integrity and value of the performer, dancers do not accept tips in their tops or belts. After the performance the client should collect the tips and hand them to the dancer before she leaves. This is greatly appreciated.
